How to Make a Media Kit in 2021
As someone who has run a social media business for the past 7 years, I find myself wanting to educate others on as many topics as possible. Last month, I covered SEO (search engine optimization) and a complete checklist for the best SEO in 2021.
Let’s chat all things related to media kits! This post will explain how to make a media kit in 2021 and exactly what to include.
What is a Media Kit?
A media kit is a relatively new concept for this era of social media influencers and content creators alike. Media kits are ways to highlight the work of a content creator as well as share examples of previous experience partnering with brands.
Media kits are typically a single page in length. A media kit provides brands with a short summary of who a content creator is. Think of it as a resume to send to brands.
If you are an influencer or content creator in 2021, you need to have a media kit on you at all times to respond to brands. I personally save a few copies of my media kit to my Google Drive and in my e-mail records.
Step By Step Guide: What To Put In a Media Kit
1. Use a Premade Template
The first step to make a media kit in 2021: find a template. You should do some research until you land upon a template that matches your branding.
Since I have a subscription to Canva, I use Canva for all of my media kits, rate cards, and blog graphics. Canva has free premade templates for media kits, too.
2. Include an About Me section
Once you’ve chosen a template, start thinking about an “About Me” section. Here is where you will outline a brief summary about yourself.
The “About Me” section should have a few standout lines:
- Include your blog name and first name
- Describe your mission as a content creator
- Include your main demographics (age, location, gender of your audience)
3. Insert a High-Quality Photo of Yourself
Don’t forget to make your media kit feel as personal as it can! Insert a professional, high-quality image of yourself into your media kit.
Use an image that speaks to your brand. Make sure the image looks crisp and bright, too. A media kit is a direct reflection of your business which means you want it to look sharp and intriguing to the eye.
Hire a professional photographer to take head shots for you if you can! I use a head shot that I am most proud of. My head shot reflects who I am as a person and a brand, Affordable by Amanda.
4. Provide Your Stats
Another vital part of your media kit? All of your social media statistics. You should add a section on your media kit to place your Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, and Blog audience by the numbers.
Underneath all of these social media platforms be sure to round your stats to the nearest thousand for easy readability.
No matter how big or how small your social media following is right now it’s important to share the honest numbers with potential brands for collaborations. You wouldn’t want to inflate your numbers and then upset a brand with false advertising.
5. Write Out What Services You Offer
A media kit wouldn’t be complete without a list of services and the rates you charge.
As influencers, we need to advocate for fair payments in exchange for social media content. You can read all about the importance of charging for social media posts here.
In my own media kit, I have my services listed as the following:
- Instagram in-feed post price
- Instagram stories fee
- IGTV fee
- TikTok Video fee
- Blog post fee
- Instagram reel price
At the end of my services I also state that packages are available upon request by brands in case they are looking for a bundle of deliverables for a campaign.
6. Contact Info
Don’t leave out these important pieces: your e-mail address, a physical address for your business, a contact phone number, and your website URL.
7. Share Your Previous Experience
If you have space for it, you can either include testimonials or examples of your previous experience.
As someone who operates a social media business, I list out the brands I’ve partnered with in the past year underneath the “About Me” section. If you’ve partnered up with a ton of businesses I would stick to highlighting your best work.
For me, I include my top-performing blog collaborations as my previous experience. I partnered with a beauty brand, Physicians Formula, on a 3-month long collaboration so I include this brand as one of my top-performing collaborations.
Once you have successfully created your own media kit you can start sending it off to brands.
