How to Get Rid of Acne Scars For Good
Hello and happy 2020! I am so excited to start this new year. Blogging has been my passion for so many years now and I am so grateful to continue to post whatever comes to mind every week online. I am constantly thinking about what new and helpful content I can create for my blog for you to enjoy.
While cleansing my skin the other night and applying my serums, I couldn’t help but look at the difference I see in my skin texture at age 25. I battled cystic acne as a teen and I finally got rid of my horrible breakouts when I went on a powerful drug called Accutane nearly 3 years ago that changed my life. These days, I am concerned about treating and eliminating the old acne scars that linger around my face from my days of battling acne. I wanted to sit down and write out a few ways that I’ve tackled my old acne scars and the products I use to diminish them over time. This blog post will cover how to get rid of old acne scars for good and the steps you can take to make your skin appear less textured.
PRODUCTS I LOVE TO HELP ACNE SCARS
Keep reading this post to learn more about how you can get rid of your old acne scars for good. I’ve spent years trying to eliminate the acne scars on my skin so I understand the pain and embarrassment they can cause people. Even when we treat existing breakouts, we are often left with scars in their place. I want to also share a disclaimer that I am not a licensed or professional dermatologist in any way! I am simply sharing my personal experience dealing with leftover acne marks and pitted scars. I truly hope my skincare advice and tips help you out as I know how overwhelming it can feel to try products that don’t work.
How to Get Rid of Acne Scars For Good
1. Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta® Universal Daily Peel
One of the main ingredients found in these daily peel pads is powerful chemicals called AHA and BHA. I will go into more detail explaining the significance of these chemicals right now. AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acid and BHA stands for beta hydroxy acid. These acids are absolutely essential for treating acne scars because they peel away the top layer of the skin to reveal a smooth layer underneath. These acids exfoliate the skin and can even out your skin tone and texture when used over time.
PRODUCTS I LOVE TO HELP ACNE SCARS
The acids found in these gentle facial peeling pads also unclog the pores to help stop breakouts from happening! It’s amazing that these Dr. Dennis Gross peel pads contain both AHA and BHA to reduce the appearance of acne scars. This 2-step daily peel is your at-home treatment plan to help treat acne scars. I’ve repurchased these Dr. Dennis Gross Daily peel pads for years to help my own acne scars fade and disappear over time.
PRO TIP: use a sunscreen on your face whenever you are outdoors because applying a product with AHA and BHA may make your skin more sensitive to the sun. I swear by the Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen to use every day under my makeup.
2. Kate Somerville Liquid ExfoliKate® Triple Acid Resurfacing Treatment
Not only do I love the scent of this exfoliating product, but I love using it because of its lightweight formula! This Kate Somerville product contains 10% AHA and is a leave-on exfoliator. I simply cleanse my skin at night, apply my favorite toner, and squirt some of this product onto a cotton pad to smooth all over my face before I head to bed. I saw online that this resurfacing treatment will work for ALL skin types, too. From dry skin to combo skin (I have combination skin) you can use this product without feeling irritated. This liquid will work wonders on old acne scars and help them disappear over time with daily use.
Liquid ExfoliKate® Triple Acid Resurfacing Treatment Has:
– 10% Triple Acid Blend (Glycolic, Lactic, and Malic Acids): Exfoliate dead skin cells, smooth away surface dullness, and hydrate for a brighter, more even-looking complexion.
– Phytic Acid with Pumpkin, Papaya, and Pineapple Enzymes: Help enhance skin exfoliation for more glowing skin.– Peptides, Honey, and Tea Extract: Help soothe and offset irritation.
PRO TIP: saturate a cotton pad with this liquid and apply all over the skin after cleansing. Follow up with your favorite moisturizer!
3. Use a Good Cleanser So You Don’t Breakout (And Create More Scars!)
A solid skincare routine will be another great way to prevent any further scarring on your skin. I wanted to recommend some of my personal favorite cleansers that I’ve relied on for years to keep my skin looking clear and fresh. I have been acne-free for years now and I can truly say that these cleansers are considered my “holy grail” cleansers for helping my combination skin look its best! I believe that a good cleanser must be tested on the skin for a minimum of 2 weeks to see any results. If a cleanser doesn’t seem to be helping you after 2 weeks I would switch to a new one. It takes time for your skin to adapt to any new skincare product which is why trial and error is necessary. I pick cleansers that are free from harmful chemicals and sulfates, too. All of these cleansers (found below) are ones that I personally use or have previously used on my skin before.
The Best Cleansers to Help Prevent New Breakouts and Acne Scars?
One of my favorite cleansers is from First Aid Beauty. |
PRO TIP: Find a GENTLE cleanser to remove impurities, makeup, and oil build-up on your skin. You can also find a great cleanser at the drugstore and combine it with a pricer product for a good mix of products to fight acne scars on your skin. A favorite drugstore cleanser of mine? The L’Oreal Pure Clay Cleanser Detox and Brighten.
4. Invest in 3-5 Microneedling Procedures
Another alternative method to help get rid of acne scars on the surface of the skin is to seek out treatment options from a licensed esthetician. This laser treatment stimulates collagen to smooth the skin and create a beautiful new layer of fresh skin without scars!
This is my face right after one microneedling session. The redness subsided after 2 days! |
Last year, I underwent 4 back to back micro needling sessions to alleviate the scarring on my skin. After each session, I was left looking red from the appointment (which is normal) and my skin was sensitive to the sun, but the repeated sessions ultimately transformed my skin. If you can afford it, I would look into scheduling microneedling appointments with a local esthetician. You should have a consultation with a licensed esthetician who can analyze the current state of your skin and evaluate your acne scars to figure out what type of treatment plan will provide you with the best end results. As with any treatment, it takes time to visibly notice the result. I think I saw the results after my third treatment with microneedling! Also, if you are scared of the sound of needles, I have to tell you that this is such a painless treatment. Your entire face will be numb with a layer of numbing cream before the needles penetrate your skin. The treatment will only last up to an hour at most. I highly, HIGHLY recommend checking into microneedling if you are suffering from deep acne scars. Sometimes it takes more than a drugstore or over the counter product to get rid of very difficult acne scars.
5. Use a Concentrated Facial Oil
Facial oils are also awesome and inexpensive products to use on the skin to treat old acne scars. There are so many great facial oils out there for you to use that can cost under $20! A classic favorite comes from the brand The Ordinary. One of their top-sellers is a cold-pressed rosehip oil for $9.80. In the reviews, you can read comments from people of all ages raving about this cold-pressed facial oil. It fades acne scars and helps with hyperpigmentation skin issues. I love applying a facial oil in the winter months when my skin starts to dry out from the colder weather. A facial oil adds the right amount of hydration my skin craves! This 100% organic rosehip oil is from Walmart and is super cheap and effective! I love keeping my bottle of rosehip oil in the fridge so it feels refreshing when I apply it at night, too.
PRO TIP: use rosehip oil on your acne scars because it contains the highest concentration of retinoic acid to reduce and refine skin tissue. Rosehip oil also contains an ingredient called linoleic acid which reduces the size of active pimples on the skin. Rosehip oil needs to be in your skincare routine ASAP — you can find it at your local Walmart or order some online through Amazon.

Hi, Amanda! Great post ❤️. I have some rolling scars on one of my cheeks, and one near my mouth. I’ve been using Tretinoin .025. I still buffer, but I’ve built up to nightly use. I believe the Tretinoin has helped to smooth out the scars. I see old pictures and my scars looked a lot more noticeable. So happy 😊 I googled ‘Ret247get’ and got tretinoin. I also have a very hydrating routine, which I think helps plump up the skin so that scars are less noticeable. I have a certain elevator I take once a week for work. It has the most stressful, disturbing lighting in the world. It makes skin texture look 10,000 times worse. I remember seeing myself in a selfie in that lighting back when I started Tret. Well, recently, just to torture myself, I took out the selfie cam again in that same elevator and noticed a much smoother texture than before. I sound toxic and obsessive. Sigh. But they’ve gotten better! I will probably wait until I run out of this Tret tube and then up to .05.
