My Self-Tanning Routine Secrets for Pale Skin
One of the main things keeping me busy during these quarantine days? Continuing to use self-tanner after I shower. It came across my mind that I still haven’t shared my complete self-tanning routine in blog form this year.
One of my goals for 2020 includes publishing my self-tanning routine and the quarantine stay-at-home order gave me the perfect reason to shoot content and write out my routine today. I am truly thankful for my boyfriend and extended my gratitude to him for having patience taking these photos for me! I mean, we are technically trapped together so he has no other choice, LOL. However, I am still grateful that he captured these images to accompany my self-tanning routine to share with you today!
As you can see, I am a pale gal. My skin naturally burns easily and it looks pale white all year long. During the summer I see just a tad more color, but since I load up on sunscreen, I don’t tan whatsoever. I’m not too bothered by my lack of tanning capabilities because that’s just the luck of the draw when you are born Irish! My pale skin tends to freckle more easily in the sun instead of achieving a nice golden tan which is the reason why I turn to beauty products for help.
Some self-tanners I’ve used in the past are from the drugstore and from Sephora.
1. Loving Tan Deluxe Bronzing Mousse
2. Coola Gradual Tan Dry Body Oil
3. St. Tropez Self Tan Express Advanced Bronzing Mousse
4. Bondi Sands 1-Hour Express Self Tanning Foam
Although I’ve tried mousse/foam formulas in the past, I’ve recently started to rely on Tan-Luxe THE BUTTER Illuminating Tanning Butter as my top pick for self-tanning.
With the bubbly mousse formulas, you need to use a mitt to apply the product to your body. My Tan-Luxe Butter doesn’t require anything more than my fingertips to apply a generous amount to sections of my body one stroke at a time.

Why I Love the Tan-Luxe Body Butter?
My bottle of Tan-Luxe THE BUTTER Illuminating Tanning Butter includes key ingredients such as dihydroxyacetone, Vitamin E, sweet almond oil, raspberry seed oil, oat kernel oil, sunflower oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter to hydrate and gradually tan the skin. With regular mousse self-tanners, I’ve never experienced such moisturized skin post-application. The mix of hydrating cocoa butter and shea butter really proves to work once you feel your skin after applying the Tan-Luxe Body Butter formula.
I’d also highly recommend a body butter for people who aren’t accustomed to using self-tanner.
If you’ve never done an at-home self-tan before, a body butter would be a nice place to start experimenting. A body butter doesn’t require anything more than a couple of pumps into your hands and gentle circular motions all over the body. Especially with this unique formula, there’s hardly any chance of spotting missing patches of self-tanner.
My Ultimate 4-Step Self-Tanning Routine: My Step by Step Breakdown!
STEP ONE: After showering under warm water with an exfoliating body scrub and shaving my legs with my favorite drugstore razor, I prep my skin for self-tanning! I make sure to scrub my arms, legs, and my chest to prep my skin for the perfect gradual tan.
STEP TWO: Once my in-shower routine ends I towel dry my entire body before I pump out the Tan-Luxe body butter into my hands. With a quarter-sized amount of product in my hands, I begin to rub it all over my arms. I make sure to apply the body butter to my stomach and my chest, too. The Tan-Luxe product instantly soaks into my skin and doesn’t leave behind any obvious residue which is hard to find with a self-tanner.
STEP THREE: Since this particular product soaks up SO well after only a couple of minutes, my next step involves finding an oversized outfit to wear while the product continues to absorb into my skin. I’ll typically throw on an old pair of shorts and a tank top to allow the tanning body butter to continue to do its magic without disturbing the process by wearing tight clothing.
STEP FOUR: After applying the Tan-Luxe body butter product all over my body I take a small amount and rub it into my favorite facial moisturizer.
I’ll take my self-tanner and moisturizer combo and gently apply it onto my face in upwards motions. Sometimes I apply the mixture using my fingertips and other times I will use a clean makeup brush for an even look! Just a note: this body butter does include “illuminating” particles that add a touch of bronzing glow to the skin.
That’s it!
My complete self-tanning routine using Tan-Luxe Body Butter. I will repeat these steps about 1-2 times per week to maintain a healthy fake tan. I always shave my legs using my joy razor in combination with a Raw Sugar Living sugar scrub to ensure a smooth canvas to apply the body butter as evenly as possible.
