10 Summer Fashion Trends for Summer 2020
To say Summer 2020 marks one of the strangest summers to date pretty much sums up how the entire world feels right now. As we continue to live through a global pandemic, the Summer months carry on with us.
With the summer months in mind, I wanted to break down some exciting summer trends to consider while keeping in mind the state of the world. Heck, I just need a reason to write a blog post on something other than stay-at-home content, too!
Even though Florida feels like summer all year round, there are exceptions during actual summer months when I invest in new denim shorts or find excuses to buy more linen dresses. When the rest of the country catches up with Florida and starts to feel hotter I take that as a sign to really start embracing summer trends alongside everyone else!
Here are 10 summer fashion trends for summer 2020. I’m personally embracing a few of them in my styled look above where I have on a smocked and tiered look courtesy of the LoveShackFancy x Target collection which dropped last month. PS: the dress I’m wearing in this post went on sale and is currently 55% off at Target!
10 Summer Fashion Trends for Summer 2020
1. Neon
At first, I felt intimidated by the idea of wearing bright neons! Talk about getting way out of my comfort zone. For summer 2020, neon looks like one of the top trends.
From bright neon bikinis to vibrant neon biker shorts, there’s no sight of this trend disappearing anytime soon. For styling bold neon colors I’d recommend choosing one neon color and pairing it with something neutral. Neon biker shorts? Pair them with a graphic tee or white cami.
2. Puff-Sleeves
Don’t get me started on how much I seriously adore wearing puff-sleeves! From mini dresses with puff-sleeves to puff-sleeve crop tops, I already have so many great pieces in my collection for summer 2020.
The 80s-inspired silhouette holds true for the summer as one of the top trends to style this year. Puff-sleeve tops look amazing with simple drawstring shorts. Tuck in a puff-sleeve top into a pair of high-waisted denim. Puff sleeves don’t have to look over the top, either. A lot of retailers are toning down the look of puff-sleeves by introducing subtle nods to this trend.
3. Bucket Hats
No, I don’t own a bucket hat right now. However, that doesn’t mean the bucket hat trend isn’t worth acknowledging on this list. Channel Mary-Kate and Ashley circa 1992 with bucket hats by the beach. I’ll gladly take any opportunity to hide my complexion from the hot sun, let me tell you. Bucket hats are so 90s it’s crazy! I’m still kinda in shock at how this trend has resurfaced, but with most 90s trends coming back in style, it was only a matter of time before bucket hats joined in on the fun.

4. Square-Toed Shoes
A super simple approach to looking on-trend for the summertime? Investing in a chic pair of square-toed shoes. One of my favorite shoes that I continue to wear out with dresses is this white square-toe pair from Just Fab. The “Beckham Flat Sandal” from JustFab includes the classic square-toe shape at the front with a buckle across the top of the foot. SUPER CUTE and flattering sandals for summer walks by the shore if you ask me!

5. Tie-Dye
Shall we put blame on Tik Tok for this next summer trend? Tie-dye has successfully infiltrated all of the online stores that I shop at for sure. Thanks to popular at-home tie-dying videos on Tik Tok, you’ll see more of this fashion trend for summer. From matching tie-dye sweat sets at Cotton On to Etsy face masks, tie-dye appears to be making a huge comeback right now.
6. Sweater Tanks
Sweater tank tops sound like the last thing you’d want to wear during the summer, but please hear me out! It has plenty of holes to keep you nice and cool. This style of tank top pairs nicely with some classic white denim shorts or your go-to distressed denim jeans for a nighttime look. Check out this neutral sweater tank from Target ($19.99). The lightweight pointelle knit fabric feels comfortable all summer long. The 90s minimalism trend has staying power all through summer and well into fall according to ELLE.com.

7. Raffia and Jute
Raffia and jute are two more major trends happening for summer 2020! This tropical-inspired trend will have us all feeling like we’re relaxing on a beach even if we’re just safe at home. Noted as summer escapist style, integrating elements of raffia and jute in July feels appropriate. One of the best ways I’m incorporating this trend includes Amazon earrings featuring raffia details and a blush woven crossbody ($36.99) bag from Target.

8. Tube Tops
Another 90s trend: tube tops. Beat the summer heat by wearing a comfortable tube top. Tube top outfits are the ultimate staycation look for bike rides. I’d suggest pairing a tube top with high-rise shorts and sneakers for a casual approach to this major 2020 trend. Tube tops can also look super sophisticated for a glam dinner with a pair of trouser pants.

9. Chunky Gold Chains
In my own jewelry collection, you’ll rarely see anything silver. I’m a gold girl through and through! For the summer, gold chains are all over Instagram. Chunky gold chains are now a must-have accessory for your summer outfit ideas. H&M has a layered gold chain necklace on sale for $14.99.

10. Babydoll Dress
Recently I styled a pink puff-sleeved babydoll dress from Urban Outfitters. Voluminous tent dresses (babydoll dresses) are the perfect match for summer days in the heat because of their forgiving and airy fabrics and shapes. If there’s one trend to invest your money in for the summertime, I’d say sweet and romantic babydoll dresses are the answer. Babydoll dresses are too easy to style! Just throw one on with a cute pair of espadrilles and a crossbody bag and you’re all set.
