Native Deodorant Review
Why Switch to a Natural Deodorant?
Hi, friend! I am back with another beauty post. This time I am tackling natural deodorant and why I find it important to make the switch to protect your body from harmful chemicals.
You may have questions regarding why you should switch to using a natural deodorant in the first place. I want to provide you with some background research and information regarding the positive benefits of using a natural deodorant over conventional brands.
Like most people, I spent many years wearing conventional deodorant brands. As a young girl, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t sweating up a storm at school or smelling around my classmates.
Antiperspirant vs Deodorant
Did you know that most conventional antiperspirants can actually make body odor worse instead of better? The salts found in antiperspirants can cause an imbalance of bacteria according to new research made by the Archives of Dermatological Research. The aluminum salts [of antiperspirants] have a much stronger effect on the βgoodβ than on the βbadβ bacteria.
Regular antiperspirants also contain toxic chemicals such as sulfates, parabens, and aluminum to stop you from sweating. Aluminum is the key ingredient that plugs up our sweat ducts to prevent sweating. Blocking the sweat pores reduces perspiration under the armpits.
As these chemicals are sitting under your armpits, they can travel into your bloodstream and can eventually absorb and store in fat cells. Putting something directly on your skin may mess with your body and it’s important to understand how certain ingredients may affect you over time.
These chemicals found in conventional deodorants worm their way past the epidermis and enter your bloodstream. This process can potentially lead to reproductive issues or cancers.
Native Deodorant Review + Tips for Switching to Natural Deodorant
Today I am excited to break out why I absolutely love wearing Native Deodorant as my chosen natural deodorant. Ever since my college days, I felt intrigued by the idea of switching from an aluminum-based deodorant over to an all-natural one.
As natural beauty products and clean beauty brands slowly made their way into my makeup and skincare routines, I knew it was only a matter of time before my deodorant followed suit.

How to Transition to a Natural Deodorant
Let me be the first to say this process of converting from traditional deodorants to natural ones took plenty of trial and error! I spent quite a few long, hot summer days in my Florida college town with a less than appealing odor underneath my arms. Transitioning the body from a conventional antiperspirant over a natural chemical-free one includes an armpit detox.
It takes a few weeks to months for armpits to completely detox from the years of aluminum build-up. My experience transitioning over to natural deodorants took a few months until I felt 100% at ease swiping a deodorant stick underneath my arm.
Don’t feel discouraged if this happens to you, too. I also had to experiment with a lot of natural deodorant brands until I found the right one for me. To this day I am always interested in testing out more natural deodorant brands, but for now, my favorite one is the Native Sensitive Deodorant Sandalwood & Shea Butter.
Can People with Sensitive Skin Use Native Natural Deodorant?
One of the main reasons why I love this natural deodorant brand? The unique sensitive formula does not contain baking soda which caused an allergic reaction (breakout) on my armpits when I first converted to natural deodorant. The first few brands of natural deodorant that I tried were the Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant: Pure Vanilla and Tom’s of Maine.
Unfortunately, some natural deodorants (despite it being natural and having chemical-free ingredients) can irritate the skin and leave behind rashes or breakouts. I learned this the hard way! Even after experiencing bright red and itchy rashes, I ended up continuing my natural deodorant journey by putting this small set back behind me.

I wanted to see if the baking soda ingredient was to blame for my painful rashes. The baking soda formulas were the culprit because as soon as I started using a baking soda free product, the rashes stopped.
I’m so happy I stopped using the baking soda based deodorants and now I strictly use deodorants that are made using coconut oil and other soothing properties instead. If you have sensitive skin, I recommend sticking to these types of soothing ingredients as well.
Why I Choose Native Sandalwood & Shea Butter
After trying out so many natural deodorant brands, I continue to pick up this certain scent from Native. The Sandalwood & Shea Butter scent lingers all day long for the best odor protection even in Florida.
Whenever I do a Target run I typically grab another solid deodorant and specifically look for this scent over others because of its skin-safe formula. The Native Sandalwood & Shea Butter deodorant contains a mix of woodsy and floral notes. I personally enjoy the smell of sandalwood which can be described as a creamy, earthy, warm, almond, rich scent.

I used other deodorants but they would make the skin on my u-arms peel. Pain! Native is all I use. It is great. Before I put medicated powder or alcohol on them to stop the sweat. Happy with native!π€

Miriam bolenSame here, Miriam! I’ve used other deodorants and broken out in rashes. I figured out it was from the baking soda active ingredient. These days I ONLY use Native and especially the sensitive line so I don’t experience break outs.
